Nationwide South Wrap
|
Newport County just failed in their quest for a play-off place on the final day of the Nationwide South season as they went down to mid-table Cambridge City.
Five games in ten days was just too much and the Exiles missed out by three points after going down to a 2-1 defeat in front of their own fans to a relaxed City outfit, whose Charlie Henry gave them a fourth-minute lead.
Stuart Sinclair doubled that on the half-time whistle, and although Stewart Edwards pulled one back for County on 68 minutes, they were unable to find an equaliser.
Bishop's Stortford gained the win they required by beating Lewes 3-0 at Woodside Park with goals from Roy Gillman on 24 minutes, Roy Essandoh on 34 and John Turner with 16 minutes remaining.
So the play-offs in Nationwide South on Wednesday sees Bishop's Stortford entertain Salisbury City and Havant & Waterlooville host third-placed Braintree Town.
Salisbury shared a goalless encounter at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium against Basingstoke Town, but that point proved enough to keep the visitors up because Hayes were only able to obtain a 1-1 draw from their visit to Park View Road against Welling United.
The Missioners led through Josh Scott's 28th-minute goal until nine minutes from time when Des Boateng equalised and then both teams ended with ten-men - Chris Moore going first for the Wings on 89 minutes and Gilbert Nuako following two minutes later.
Thurrock gained the three points they needed to ensure safety with a 3-0 win at Ship Lane against Sutton United. Cliff Akurang put the Essex side in front with 20 minutes remaining and then Sutton's Luke Naughton was sent-off.
Thurrock made the most of their extra man advantage, Akurang adding another on 82 minutes and Ryan Palmer converting an own-goal three minutes from time.
Andy Forbes bagged a brace as Eastleigh won 4-1 at The Warren against Yeading, with Steve West and Andy Harris also finding the target after Marvin Morgan had given the Ding a sixth-minute lead.
Havant were involved in a 3-3 draw at Fisher Athletic in which Brett Poate scored twice for the Hawks on 13 and 45 minutes, while Gavin Tomlin did likewise for the hosts after 16 and 26 minutes.
Ashley Carew then put Fish ahead on 70 minutes only for Jamie Collins to equalise five minutes later.
Any chance Eastbourne Borough had of making the play-offs ended with Bishop's Stortford`s win, but they went down themselves anyway, losing 2-1 at home to Braintree Town.
Braintree confirmed their place in the play-offs with goals from Brad Quinton from the spot on 34 minutes and Billy Burgess on 61 minutes after Allan Tait had pulled Boro back on level terms two minutes before half-time.
Relegated Weston-super-Mare went down to a 3-1 home defeat to mid-table Bognor Regis Town, whose Ben Watson on 27 minutes, Matt Ruby on 49 and Seb Wallis-Taylor on 55 cancelled out Marc McGregor's 35th-minute reply for the hosts.
Bedford Town, also confirmed as being relegated some time ago, won 3-1 at Dorchester Town, while champions Histon went out in style, beating Farnborough Town by the odd goal in five.
Jamie Barker bagged a brace for the Stutes while Michael Charles did likewise for Boro and Danny Wright added a third for the visitors.
