Grainger joins Stortford

Nationwide South club Bishops Stortford have welcomed former Birmingham City left back Martin Grainger to their pre-season training.

The 33-year old has returned to football on a part-time basis after a two-year break and Coach Paul Joynes has been impressed with him so far.

"Martin retired from the pro game two years ago with an injury, but a specialist said he could play part-time," Joynes said.

"He has looked extremely impressive in training. In terms of fitness he has been very good."

Grainger started his career as a trainee with Colchester United and went on to join Brentford for £60,000 in October 1993.

He made over 100 appearances for Brentford before making a £400,000 switch to Birmingham and spent eight years at St Andrews.

However, following a loan spell at Coventry City he picked an injury and decided to retire.
